Stay updated through our LinkedIn page, where we publish the latest on Ballast water management and the status of the convention ratification.
A lot has been published recently on the upcoming ratification of the IMO Ballast water convention. The required treshold value of 35% of global GRT was nearly met early this year, but after a recalculation of the tonnage the percentage dropped again.
Latest countries to ratify were Peru and Santa Lucia, but the percentage they added was still not sufficient to meet the criteria.
Last in line is Finland; ratification would mean another 0,14% of the global fleet added, and the total would be 35,01%, just enough for the measures to come in to force. The Finnish government is taking the last administrative steps towards actual ratification.
Many believe this will happen in Q3 2016, meaning ballast water treatment will be mandatory one year after!
