Laying up your units…?
With the oil prices still stuck below 50 USD/bbl more owners of rigs and OSV’s are forece to lay up / coldstack their units. As the decisions for cold stacking are in quite a few occasions taken suddenly, the process of laying up a vessel is not done in the most favourable way. Although the short term effects are negligible, the long term effects can be devastating. An initial lay-up survey is required, if it was just to comply with statutory regulations, but much more important is the way that preservation and maintenance policies during the layup period are implemented.
Re-activating a unit after a longer period will prove the value of your maintenance systems: either you face an endless flow of malfunctions in many systems, or you have a rather smooth recommissioning of your unit. The choice is yours:
-have your maintenance plans screened, preferably with an on site survey.
-take time to implement and execute the actions as per plans.
-regular reporting and updating of the PMS by your (skeleton) crew is essential
Although these actions may cost you a bit more initially, it will certainly pay off as you:
-save on expensive repairs and subsequent downtime
-can actually plan your re-commisioning so you will be able to meet your contractual requirements
-will not loose valuable manhours in quick repairs and trouble shooting along the way.
-ensure the value of your assets stays at an appropriate level
